Explanation

This year we learned: we receive information with our senses, store, process and pass it on. A code writes information, decoding reads it. An algorithm is a sequence of actions that leads to a result; it can be linear or branching. A computer has a monitor, a system unit, a keyboard and a mouse. We keep our passwords and personal information private.

Worked examples
Puzzle: A = 1, B = 2, D = 3. The code 3, 1, 3, 1 gives the word “DADA” (dad). This is decoding.
A robot from the bottom left went ↑ ↑ → → ↓: it is 2 squares right and 1 square up.
Class activity

“Year quiz”: three teams. Questions come in 4 groups: information, codes, algorithms, computer. 1 point for each right answer. At the end each child states one safety rule.

Practice
1
A robot from the bottom left square did ↑ ↑ → → ↓. How many squares right and how many up is it from the start?
2
Table: A = 1, B = 2, D = 3, E = 4. Decode: 4, 2, 1.
3
Name the four main parts of a computer.
