Explanation

Algorithm for turning a computer on: 1) check that the system unit and monitor are plugged into the socket; 2) turn on the monitor; 3) press the power button of the system unit. When it starts, the desktop appears on the screen. The small pictures on the desktop are icons. With the mouse we choose them and open programs. To turn off we press the “Start” button and choose “Shut down”. If we turn it off wrongly, unsaved information may be lost.

Worked examples
Flowchart: (Start) → [check the socket] → [turn on the monitor] → [turn on the system unit] → (End). 3 actions.
On a school desk the notebook, book and pen are tidy. On the computer desktop, icons are also kept in order.
Class activity

“Turn on and off”: children arrange cards in the right order (check the socket, turn on the monitor, turn on the system unit; Start button, Shut down). Then two children act it out on a paper computer.

Practice
1
What do we check first before turning on?
2
Write the algorithm in order: turn on the system unit, check the socket, turn on the monitor.
3
What can happen if we turn the computer off wrongly?
