The cycling of matter and energy in the biosphere

Textbook: pp. 150–153
GoalCompare the geological and biological cycles of matter and explain how they are linked and what they contribute to the stability of the biosphere.

Explanation

In the biosphere matter is never lost; it circulates continuously, driven by solar energy. In the geological cycle abiotic factors act: rocks weather, are carried to the sea and form sediments, then tectonic movements raise them to land again; this takes tens or hundreds of thousands of years and involves all elements of the Earth’s crust. In the biological cycle only biogenic elements (C, H, O, N, P, S and others) take part and it is fast – years or decades: producers build organic matter from inorganic substances, consumers eat it, and decomposers break detritus down again into mineral substances. The two cycles are linked: some elements leave the biological cycle and enter the geological one as sediment, coal or oil, while elements of the geological cycle are taken up by living organisms. Together they form the biogeochemical cycle of elements, the basis of the stability of the biosphere.

Worked examples
Limestone formation: molluscs take calcium and carbon from water to build shells (biological cycle). When they die, the shells sink and form limestone beds, and the carbon passes into the geological cycle for millions of years.
Fallen leaves: leaf litter on the ground is turned into mineral salts in the soil by bacteria and fungi, and tree roots take them up again – a fast biological cycle.
Class activity

Leaf-litter experiment: put damp soil and leaves in two clear jars, add a few earthworms or some rotting grass to one but not the other. Observe for 7 days and compare how the leaves decompose. Safety: keep the jars closed, wear gloves, do not sniff mould and wash hands afterwards.

Practice
1
What drives the geological cycle? The biological cycle?
2
If a geological cycle lasts 20000 years and a biological one 20 years, how many times longer is the geological cycle?
3
Why would the biological cycle stop without decomposers?
4
Which elements take part in the biological cycle?
