Explanation

The biosphere is the shell of the Earth inhabited by living organisms and changed by their activity. The scientist who developed the idea in depth was V. I. Vernadsky, who showed that the present look of the Earth – the composition of the atmosphere, sedimentary rocks, soil – was shaped by living organisms. Other levels of life (cell, organism, population, ecosystem) are parts of the biosphere; it is their most complex and largest unit, and its structural unit is the biogeocenosis. Planet-wide processes occur in the biosphere: continuous capture of solar energy, release of oxygen by plants, maintenance of the ozone layer, a relatively constant level of carbon dioxide, and the cycling of matter. The stability of the biosphere is not fixed immobility but dynamic balance: the flow of matter and energy never stops, yet their overall balance is kept. Modern biology studies global problems at the biosphere level, such as oxygen production, climate change and the conservation of biological diversity.

Worked examples
Ocean phytoplankton and land plants together keep atmospheric oxygen steady. If either declines on a large scale (for example, if tropical forests are cleared or the ocean is heavily polluted), the effect is not limited to one ecosystem but touches the gas balance of the whole planet – a biosphere-level process.
Atmospheric carbon dioxide stayed almost constant for millennia but rose quickly in the last 200 years as coal, oil and gas were burned – an example of human influence at the biosphere level.
Class activity

Draw the chain of life levels in your notebook (cell → organism → population → biogeocenosis → biosphere) and write one example from your own surroundings for each link. Safety: paper work only.

Practice
1
What is the structural unit of the biosphere?
2
CO2 makes up about 0.04 % (4/10000) of air. How many ml of CO2 are in 100 000 ml of air?
3
Why is the stability of the biosphere called «dynamic»?
4
What did Vernadsky conclude?
