Explanation

Human ecology studies the links between human communities and their surroundings, and how environmental factors affect health. Like other organisms, humans depend on environmental factors, yet they change the environment deliberately, use powerful energy sources and build an artificial environment. Health is affected by physical (noise, temperature, radiation), chemical (toxic substances in air and water), biological (microbes, parasites) and social (housing, work and rest routine, nutrition) factors. Groups living in different climates have developed adaptations: heat production is strong in cold regions, sweating is active in hot, humid ones, and in mountains the blood carries many red cells and much haemoglobin for oxygen transport. Such adapted groups are called adaptive types, and they depend on the living environment, not on race traits. In cities dense populations make infections spread more easily and air pollution and little movement are risks; in villages, diseases from animals and pesticides are more of a risk.

Worked examples
In a person who has long lived at high altitude, red cells and haemoglobin rise because oxygen is scarce – a trait of the mountain adaptive type. After moving down, these values slowly return to normal.
Far from the sea, soil and water may contain little iodine; with too little iodine the thyroid gland does not work properly. Using iodised table salt prevents this problem.
Class activity

Make a one-day «health factors» table for your family: find the physical, chemical, biological and social factors met at home and outside. Only observe; taste nothing and do not touch cleaning chemicals.

Practice
1
Why are humans counted as a special ecological factor?
2
If 2500 kcal are needed per day, how much energy (kcal) is needed for 4 days?
3
Why is the red cell count high in the mountain adaptive type?
4
Do adaptive types depend on race? Explain.
