Countries of Oceania
Textbook: pp. 115–117
GoalDescribe the composition of Oceania, its island types, resources and economy.
Oceania is a group of islands in the south-western and central Pacific with a land area of about 1.3 million km² (the Australian mainland is treated separately). It is divided into Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia. There are three kinds of islands: continental (New Zealand, New Guinea), volcanic and coral (atolls). Atolls are low with poor soil, so fresh water and farmland are scarce. Most states are small with few people; about 13 are independent. Copper and gold in Papua New Guinea, nickel in New Caledonia and phosphate on Nauru have been historically important. The economy rests on agriculture: coconut palm (copra), bananas, pineapples, sugarcane; fishing and tourism (for example in Fiji) are growing. New Zealand leads in development, with strong dairy and sheep farming, food industry and tourism. Problems: hard communication between islands, few resources, unemployment and the danger of rising sea level.
Worked examples
Time difference: Tashkent is UTC+5, Wellington in the (southern) winter, June–August, is UTC+12. The difference is 12 − 5 = 7 hours. If it is 10:00 in Tashkent, it is 10 + 7 = 17:00 in Wellington.
An atoll is a ring-shaped coral island with a lagoon in the middle. It is built from the skeletons of coral polyps, so such islands are only a few metres above sea level and very sensitive to rising water.
Class activity
“Island types”: students write three features for continental, volcanic and coral islands, make a table and add one example for each.
Practice
1
Name the three parts of Oceania.
Melanesia, Polynesia, Micronesia.
2
If it is 15:00 in Tashkent, what time is it in Wellington (winter, UTC+12)? (Number only, 24-hour clock.)

3
Why are fresh water and farmland scarce on atolls?
They are low coral islands with porous, poor soil that does not hold water.
4
Why does Oceania's economy face difficulties?
Islands are scattered and links costly, resources are few, the market is small, and many states depend on one or two products.
