Explanation
A naqsh is a decoration where the same shapes repeat in an order. Uzbek masters put patterns on buildings, dishes, carpets and embroidered suzani. A mosaic is a picture made of small coloured pieces. We arrange triangles, squares and circles in order to make a pattern.
Worked examples
Blue square, yellow circle, blue square, yellow circle… is a repeating pattern.
Class activity
Steps: 1) Cut small squares, triangles and circles from blue, white and yellow paper. 2) Lay them in order along a straight line on card, e.g. square, triangle, square. 3) Check the order is right, then glue. 4) Add the same pattern on rows above and below. Safety: when cutting small pieces, keep your fingers away from the blades.
