The world of plants
Textbook Part 1, pp. 14–16
GoalKnow the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to live.
New words
root · ildizstem · poyaleaf · bargflower and fruit · gul va meva
Explanation
Plants are alive: they grow, feed and make new plants. Many plants have a root, stem, leaves, flowers and fruit. The root takes in water; the leaves catch sunlight. A plant needs water, light, air and warmth. Plants can be trees, bushes or grasses.
Worked examples
Trees: apricot, apple, plane tree. Bushes: rose, wild rose. Herbs: rayhon (basil), jambil (thyme).
Inside an apple there are seeds — a new tree can grow from them.
Class activity
Experiment: put wet cotton wool in two cups and plant a bean in each. Put one by the window and one in a dark cupboard. Watch for a week: which grows better?
