Review: staying safe and storing files
ICT P6 Term 1, Themes 1–2
GoalReview safe gaming, cyber security, copyright, e-trading and the cloud with new tasks.
New words
spoofing · pretending to be a business or someone you know, to trick youencryption · changing data into a secret code so only the owner can read ite-trading · buying and selling shares yourself on a website or an appcloud storage · keeping files on remote servers that you reach over the internet
Explanation
Now Theme 2, calmly and positively. Remember that you are never in trouble for telling a trusted adult. Games: they can teach thinking and teamwork, and they have three kinds of risk, physical, psychological and security. A limit agreed with your family leaves time for sleep, homework, moving about and friends, so it supports well-being. Digital theft: use strong passwords, a second proof, fingerprint or face locks, and encryption. Cyber security: beware of scareware and spoofing, never click strange links, make a safety plan. Copyright and money: respect creators, name your sources; shares are equal parts of a company, prices can fall, and only adults invest. The cloud: remote servers store files; good points are space, back-up, sharing and extra security; weak points are the need for internet, cost and a small breach risk. Cloud suites bring office tools together, and sharing can be view-only or edit.

Worked examples
Situation
Kind of risk
tired and sore after playing too long
physical
upset after unkind words
psychological
sharing details with a stranger
security
Risk sorting. Feeling tired and sore after playing too long is a physical risk. Feeling upset after unkind words is a psychological risk. Sharing personal details with a stranger is a security risk.
Spot the threat. A box says ‘Virus found! Click now!’: scareware. A message with a friend’s name asks for a password: spoofing. An advert says ‘Double your money in a week!’: a scam. For all three: do not click, do not answer, tell a grown-up.
Problem
What helps
a lost flash drive
cloud back-up
a guessed password
a second proof
a thief copies a file
encryption
a relative should only read
view-only sharing
Problem and solution. A flash drive is lost: a cloud back-up helps. A password is guessed: a second proof helps. A thief copies a file: encryption helps. A family member needs to read a story: view-only sharing helps.
Class activity
Cloud stand plan. Plan an exhibition stand about one cloud application, for example a cloud suite with sharing. Draw the stand, write three labels (what it is, what it helps with, how to keep it safe) and a poster with four safety rules. Do not use any real account or product name.
Practice
1
Name the three kinds of risk in online games.
Physical, psychological and security.
2
A pop-up says ‘Virus found!’ with a link. What is it, and what do you do?
It is scareware. Do not click; tell a grown-up.
3
Give one security feature of the cloud.
Password-protected storage, or encryption.
4
How can a family limit on games support well-being?
It leaves time for sleep, homework, moving about and friends.
