Buying and selling online
E-commerce is the trade of goods and services over the internet. Goods are things, like a notebook. Services are work done for you, like an online lesson. Online shops are everywhere, so a consumer has a lot of choice. That can feel overwhelming. Experienced consumers use tools that help them research before they decide, and you will meet three of them in the next lesson. In a real shop you can touch things and ask the seller. Online you see photos, descriptions, prices and other people’s comments, and the goods arrive later. Before buying anything, in a shop or online, a careful buyer asks: do I need it? What is the price? Is the quality good? Can I trust the seller? Children do not buy online by themselves: a parent or another grown-up decides and does the buying. In this lesson, all shopping is a pretend game on paper.

Paper shop. Draw a pretend online shop page with four items and invented prices. Swap with a partner. Each person asks three questions about an item before ‘buying’ it, using the four questions from the lesson. Nobody buys anything real. A parent decides if the family really shops online.
