Review: tools and technology around us

ICT P6 Term 1, Themes 1–2
GoalReview networks, new technology, judging products, searching, mobile devices, open source and HTML with new puzzles.
New words
modem · the device that brings the internet in and changes the provider’s signal into a digital oneaugmented reality (AR) · a real view with computer pictures added on topopen source · code that can be read and changed by anyonetag · a word in angle brackets that tells the browser what a part of the page is
Explanation

Let us review Theme 1 in five groups. One: networks. The internet reaches your home through a modem, then a router shares the connection, a switch sends data only to the right device, and devices join by cables (wired) or by Wi-Fi (wireless). Two: new technology. Virtual reality is a computer-made world you step into; augmented reality adds computer pictures to the real view; artificial intelligence learns from examples. Three: judging and finding. Ask the seven user-experience questions: accessible, credible, desirable, findable, usable, useful, valuable. A search engine is fast but needs checking; a general database holds articles on many subjects, and a subject database holds one topic; a catalogue lists one library. Four: mobile devices and systems. Phones and tablets are useful when used responsibly; open source means anyone may read and change the code. Five: HTML. A tag opens and closes a part of a page, and learning it helps you understand and build web pages, because it is a first computer language.

Worked examples
Order puzzle. Put these in the order the internet travels to Salma’s tablet: tablet, router, modem, internet. The answer is internet, modem, router, tablet.

Match puzzle. A headset and a world you can step into: virtual reality. A camera and labels added over a real desk: augmented reality. A program that learns faces from many examples: artificial intelligence.

Output
Dates
They are sweet.
Code puzzle. A page for Karim has a heading and a paragraph. The heading uses h1 and the paragraph uses p. Each part starts with an opening tag and ends with a closing tag that has a slash. The browser shows the words, not the tags.
Class activity

Exhibition stand plan. On one big sheet plan a stand about HTML and one cutting-edge technology. Draw the stand, write labels and captions for three pictures, and add three puzzle cards that visitors can solve: an order puzzle, a match puzzle and a find-the-mistake code puzzle. Swap puzzles with a partner and solve them.
