Explanation

ICT means Information and Communication Technology: computers, phones, programs and the internet that help us keep information and speak to other people. People of determination are people who meet a challenge, for example in seeing, hearing, speaking or moving. They have talents and dreams like everyone, and the right tool can open a door for them. A tool that makes a job possible or easier is called assistive technology. Here are three examples. A program can change the lines of a graph into musical notes, so a person who cannot see the graph can hear it go up and down. Another program can turn a text file into a form that a screen reader can read aloud. Some libraries in Egypt have scanners that turn printed pages into sound. People also help: volunteer mentors give advice about writing a CV and about job interviews. There are more than one billion people of determination in the world, so these ideas matter. Remember: humans program computers so that computers can help other humans.

Worked examples

Salma’s class counts the books read each week: 2, 4, 6, 8. A program plays one note for each week. Karim cannot see the graph, but he hears the notes get higher and higher. He knows the number of books is growing.

Youssef’s grandfather cannot see small print. At the library, a scanner reads a page of a story and a voice reads it aloud while he listens.

Mariam is finishing school and does not know how to write a CV. A volunteer mentor sits with her for an hour and shows her what to put on the page. The mentor is a person, not a machine, and still part of the help.
Class activity

Make a three-box card. In the first box draw a printed page. In the second box draw an arrow and write what the scanner does. In the third box draw a speaker. Show your card to a family member and explain who it helps.
