Write a recipe step by step
Connect Primary 5 Term 1, Unit 1: pp. 10–17
GoalWrite a recipe with ingredients, imperative verbs and order words.
New words
ingredients · the things you need for a recipemix · stir things togetherpour · make a liquid go from one place into anotherfirst, next, then · words that show the orderfinally · the last step
Explanation
A recipe has two parts. First we list the ingredients, the things we need. Then we write the steps. We start each step with a verb in the base form, for example Wash, Pour or Mix. We call this an imperative. We add order words: first, next, then, after that, finally. Think about safety too. Write: Ask a grown-up to cut the fruit. Never use a hot oven or a sharp knife alone.
Order word
Example step
First
First, wash the fruit.
Next
Next, ask a grown-up to cut it.
Then
Then put it in a bowl.
Finally
Finally, share the salad.
Worked examples
Look at the ingredients for a fruit salad.
Fruit salad. First, wash the fruit. Next, ask a grown-up to cut the oranges and the banana into small pieces. Then put the fruit in a big bowl and add the grapes. After that, pour the juice of half a lemon over the fruit. Finally, mix gently and share the salad with your family.
