Staying cool in a heat wave
A heat wave is a time of very hot weather. In a heat wave we must take care. We say what is a good idea with should: You should drink water. We say what is not a good idea with shouldn’t: You shouldn’t play in the sun at midday. At midday the sun is strongest, so it is better to rest inside or in the shade. If you feel ill or very tired, tell a grown-up at once. Read the table.
| We should … | We shouldn’t … |
|---|---|
| drink a lot of water | play in the sun at midday |
| wear light clothes and a sun hat | wear dark, heavy clothes |
| rest in the shade | stay outside when we feel ill |
Dad, it is a heat wave. Can I play football at noon?
No, you shouldn’t. The sun is very strong at midday.
What should I do?
You should stay inside, drink water and play in the evening.
During the heat wave, Salma’s family stayed at home at midday. They closed the curtains and drank a lot of water. In the evening, Salma and her brother walked to the park under the trees. They wore light clothes and sun hats. Salma felt tired, so she told her mum. They went inside and rested. At night the air was cooler, and everyone slept well.
