Explanation

The ending -ist often means a person who does something. A dentist looks after teeth. A pianist plays the piano. A scientist works with science. A journalist writes the news. Today we also practise three sounds. The letters ow in cow say the sound in ‘ouch’. The letters igh in night say ‘eye’. The letters oy in boy say the sound in ‘oil’. Be careful: ow can also say ‘oh’, as in snow and yellow. Today we read ow as in cow.
