What happened and what we should do
The past simple tells what happened before now. Regular verbs end in -ed: play, played; walk, walked; help, helped; study, studied. Some verbs are irregular: is, was; go, went; see, saw; have, had; swim, swam; do, did. Now look at modal verbs. We say should for a good idea: You should drink water. We say must for a rule: You must stop at a red light. We say mustn’t when it is not allowed: You mustn’t run across the road.
