Menu problems: prices and totals
A menu shows the food and the prices in Egyptian pounds, LE. We add the prices to find the total. Soup is 12 LE and salad is 10 LE. 12 + 10 = 22, so the total is 22 LE. If we pay with 50 LE, we get change. 50 - 22 = 28, so the change is 28 LE. Waiters help every guest in a kind way. They read the menu aloud for a guest who cannot see. They make space for a guest in a wheelchair. We respect everybody.
| Menu | Price |
|---|---|
| chicken and rice | 45 LE |
| lentil soup | 12 LE |
| salad | 10 LE |
| juice | 8 LE |
| ful sandwich | 6 LE |
What would you like?
One lentil soup and one salad, please.
That is 12 plus 10: 22 LE.
Here is 50 LE.
Thank you. Your change is 28 LE.
A guest named Mr Adel cannot see. The waiter reads the menu aloud to him: ‘Chicken and rice, 45 LE. Lentil soup, 12 LE. Salad, 10 LE.’ Mr Adel orders a soup and a juice. The waiter writes the order, brings the food and says, ‘Your soup is in front of you, on the right.’ Mr Adel smiles and says thank you.
Menu shop. The grown-up writes a menu with five foods and prices on paper. The child is the customer and orders two things, adds the prices and pays with paper money. The grown-up works out the change. Swap roles.
