Add big numbers; Egyptian monuments
We add big numbers with hundreds, tens and ones. Add the ones first. 346 + 125: 6 + 5 = 11, write 1 and carry 1 ten. Tens: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. Hundreds: 3 + 1 = 4. The total is 471. Egypt has famous monuments. The Great Pyramid at Giza was built for the pharaoh Khufu about 4,500 years ago. The Great Sphinx at Giza is 73 metres long and 20 metres tall. A fact file gives the facts and a paragraph tells them in sentences.
| Hundreds | Tens | Ones | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 346 | 3 | 4 | 6 |
| + 125 | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Total | 4 | 7 | 1 |
On Friday 346 people visited the museum. On Saturday 125 more people visited it. Together that is 471 people. A guide told them that the Great Pyramid at Giza is about 4,500 years old. The visitors listened with big eyes.

Fact-file paragraph. The child writes four lines: Name, Where is it? How tall is it? Why do you like it? for a monument of their choice (with a grown-up’s help) and then turns the lines into a paragraph of four sentences. The child reads it aloud.
