Literature is the art of the word. The word “adabiyot” comes from “adab”, meaning good manners and moral education, so in the East literature has served to make the human spirit beautiful and well-mannered. The textbook calls literature a “treasury of spirituality”: it keeps great feelings such as humanity, kindness, justice, friendship and love of the homeland. Material wealth feeds the body, while a book enriches the soul, so a person who reads is likely to improve in speech and behaviour. There are three levels of reading a work: simply reading, understanding (grasping the meaning) and feeling (rejoicing and grieving together with the hero). A person who does not read with feeling is like someone who cannot tell a living flower from an artificial one. A writer or poet is a creator who understands the pain of the people and explores the human spirit.

Example: “odob” is understood broadly, not narrowly: love of the homeland, care for parents, respect for elders and standing by a person in need all belong to it.
