Short and long vowels
Short vowels are small marks above or below a letter: fatha โู is a, kasra โู is i, damma โู is u. A long vowel is made with a letter: ุง gives ฤ, ู gives ฤซ, ู gives ลซ. Egyptian also has ฤ and ล: ูู after a fatha is ฤ (ุจูููุช bฤt) and ูู after a fatha is ล (ููููู yลm); in some common words a plain ู or ู is said ฤ or ล too (ุฅููู ฤh, ูููู fฤn), and the transliteration always shows it. Sukun โู means no vowel: the letter closes the syllable, as in ู ูุฏูุฑูุณูุฉ. Shadda โู means the letter is said twice: ุณููููุฑ sukkar. At the start of a word, ุฃ or ุฅ (alif with a small hamza ุก) is simply said a or i: ุฃูููููู aywa, ุฅูุฒูููููู izzayyak. Normal Arabic writing leaves these marks out; this course writes them all, so you can always read.
