Explanation

A recipe uses commands. Learn these four as whole words: اِغْسِل (wash!), اِقْطَع (cut!), اِخْلِط (mix!), اُطْبُخ (cook!). They are for one man. For one woman add ـِي: اِغْسِلِي، اِقْطَعِي، اِخْلِطِي، اُطْبُخِي. Put the thing after the command: اِغْسِل الطَّمَاطِم. Add مِن فَضْلِك to be polite. The tomatoes are a plural of things, so الطَّمَاطِم لَذِيذَة is a correct sentence.

Commands to a woman.

Class activity

Write a recipe with four steps for a simple dish: a salad, a sandwich or tea. Use at least the four commands of this lesson. Write the recipe for a man and then for a woman. Read it aloud, and cook it if you can!

Practice

Press Listen. The command is “go!”. Is it said to a man or to a woman?

Write in Arabic (to a man): “wash the vegetables”.

The picture shows an onion. Write “cut the onion” (to a woman).

The picture shows a pan. Write “cook the eggs” (to a man).
