Explanation

Here are the main parts of the body. Four of them come in pairs: عَيْن (eye), أُذُن (ear), يَد (hand) and رِجْل (leg or foot). Body parts that come in pairs are feminine, so the describing word ends in ـَة: يَد كَبِيرَة, “a big hand”. The others are masculine: رَأْس كَبِير, “a big head”. The dual shows the pair: عَيْنَان “two eyes”, يَدَان “two hands”. Add an ending to say “my”: رَأْسِي، عَيْنِي، يَدِي.

A describing word for a feminine and a masculine part.

Class activity

Play the game of Dina and Omar with a friend or in front of a mirror. Touch a part of your body and say it: “هَذِهِ يَدِي” for the feminine parts and “هَذَا رَأْسِي” for the masculine ones. Then write six short phrases with a body part and a describing word, for example: يَد صَغِيرَة، رَأْس كَبِير. Check the ending ـَة for the feminine parts.
