Explanation

To say “a glass of water” put the two nouns together, without الْ: كُوب مَاء. This is the construct from Unit 4. The first noun is the container or the amount, the second is the thing. So we say زُجَاجَة عَصِير (a bottle of juice), قِطْعَة جُبْن (a piece of cheese), كِيلُو تُفَّاح (a kilo of apples) and لِتْر حَلِيب (a litre of milk). For two use the dual: كُوبَان مِنَ الشَّاي, “two glasses of tea”.

Class activity

Make a shopping list in Arabic with eight things and their amounts (كِيلُو …، لِتْر …، زُجَاجَة …). Then act out a dialogue in a shop with a friend: one is the seller, one is the customer.
