GoalCompare a messy file list with a tidy one and plan my own school folders.
New words
tidy · everything is in its place and easy to findmessy · things are mixed up and hard to findrename · to give a file a better namepersonal files · files that belong only to you, such as your own drawings
Explanation
Look at two lists. List A has files named ‘new’, ‘new2’, ‘IMG_483’, ‘final’ and ‘final final’. It is messy, and you must open each one to learn what it is. List B is tidy: ‘Maths_homework_week3’, ‘Science_plants_photo’, ‘Arabic_story_draft’. Each name tells the subject and the topic. To tidy up, make a main folder, make sub-folders, rename the files and move each file where it belongs. Plan before you start. A good plan has two parts: a school folder tree for your lessons, and a separate folder tree for personal files, like your own drawings. Draw the plan on paper first, just like drawing a map before a trip.

Worked examples
Seif’s mother cannot find the file with the family trip photos. They are in a folder named ‘stuff’. They rename it ‘Trip_Alexandria’ and put it inside ‘Family photos’.
Nour keeps school files in ‘School’ and her own drawings in ‘My drawings’. When she shares her school folder with a teacher, her drawings stay private.
Before she makes any folders, Farida draws a plan on paper with the main folder at the top and sub-folders below. It takes five minutes and saves her an hour later.
Class activity
My folder plan. On paper, draw your own tree for school: a main folder, at least three sub-folders, and two files in each. Use clear names. Draw a second small tree for your personal files. Ask a partner: ‘Can you tell where the maths homework goes?’ Fix anything that is not clear.
Practice
1
Which list is tidy: ‘new, new2, final’ or ‘Maths_homework_week3, Science_plants_photo’?
The second one, because each name tells the subject and the topic.
2
Name the four things you do to tidy up files.
Make a main folder, make sub-folders, rename the files, move each file to its place.
3
Why plan on paper first?
It saves time later and helps you see the whole order.
4
Why keep personal files in a separate folder?
So they stay private when you share the school folder.
