Explanation
Theme 1 was about the role of ICT in our lives. Here is a summary. We choose a tool for a message: a spreadsheet for numbers, slides for a group, e-mail for formal messages. We share across places and time zones, write notes after a meeting and mentor others. Hardware has ports, cables and drives; data is counted in bits and bytes, with each bigger unit about a thousand times the one before. A network links people or things; the internet is a network of networks; an intranet is private. Troubleshooting has five steps. Files live in folders with clear names. A search starts with a plan and key words. A spreadsheet has columns with letters, rows with numbers, and formulas that start with =. Now try new puzzles on your own.

Worked examples
Puzzle 1. A class must show test results to parents who live in another city. The results are numbers. Best plan: keep the numbers in a spreadsheet, draw a bar graph, and send both by e-mail. The intranet is the wrong place if the parents cannot use it.
Puzzle 2. A file named ‘final2’ is in a folder called ‘stuff’. Better: rename it ‘Science_plants_report’ and put it in School > Science. The name now tells the subject and the topic.
Puzzle 3. The long question ‘Please tell me how kites fly high in the wind’ becomes the key words kite fly wind. If the results are too many, add a word or use quotation marks for an exact phrase.
Class activity
Quiz-maker. Write three review questions on cards, one about hardware or data, one about networks and one about files or search. Write the answers on the back. Swap with a partner, answer, and check each other’s cards. Then write on one line the Week you found hardest and one thing that would help you remember it.
Practice
1
Put the troubleshooting steps in order: try them one by one, identify the problem, ask for help, think of solutions, review.
Identify the problem, think of solutions, try them one by one, review, ask for help.
2
How many bits does the word ‘Hana’ need? It has 4 letters.
4 × 8 = 32 bits.
3
A1 is 8, B1 is 4 and C1 is 3. What does = A1 + B1 + C1 show?
15.
4
Which is private to the school: the intranet or the open web? Where do class marks go?
