Keep my research in one place
ICT P5 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 30–33
GoalExplain how a browser’s collection feature keeps research in one place, and organise research on paper the same way.
New words
browser · a program for visiting websitescollection · a place in a browser where you save pages, pictures and notes for one projectexport · to send saved material to another programorganise · to put things in order so they are easy to find
Explanation
When you research, you meet many useful things: web pages, pictures, charts, short texts, links and your own notes. If they are all over the place, you lose them. Many browsers have a feature that keeps everything for one project together in a collection. You start a new collection, give it a name, and add the page you are on, a picture, a piece of text or a link. You can add a note too. You make one collection for each project, so a water project and a bird project never mix. Later you can send, or export, a collection to a word processor or a spreadsheet to build your report. You can do the same on paper: one folder with a divider and a label for every project.
Start a new collection→Give it a name→Add pages, pictures, text, links, notes→Export to my report
Worked examples
Mariam has two projects: ‘Water’ and ‘Birds’. She makes one collection for each. When she needs a bird picture, she opens ‘Birds’ and finds it at once.
Karim finds a chart and a link while he researches. He adds both to his collection and writes a note: ‘use the chart on page 2’. His report will be quick to build.
Nour has no computer at home. She uses a paper folder with dividers: ‘Water’, ‘Birds’ and ‘Plants’. She puts printed pictures and notes behind each divider. It works in the same way.
Class activity
Make a paper collection. Take a sheet folded in half and some sticky notes or small papers. Choose a project, for example ‘Water in Egypt’. Make a cover with the name. Inside, paste or draw four items: a picture, a short text in your own words, a link idea (write the name of a website with a grown-up) and a note to yourself. Label each item. Show it to a partner who finds the picture in under ten seconds.
Practice
1
Name three things a collection can keep for one project.
For example: web pages, pictures, text, links or notes.
2
Why make one collection for each project?
So that the projects do not mix and things are easy to find.
3
What does ‘export’ mean?
To send saved material to another program, such as a word processor.
4
Look at the picture. Which one is the paper way of keeping a project together? Say the letter.
