Which source for which job?

ICT P5 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 34–37
GoalMatch each kind of online source to the job it does best.
New words
source · a place where you find informationverified · checked by people to make sure it is correctkey word · an important word you type to searchsearch engine · a tool that looks for web pages that match the words you type
Explanation

Different jobs need different sources. An online library has verified content, with images and videos, and sometimes dictionaries and encyclopedias. A search for items that are free to use helps you find pictures and sounds that you may use, but check them, because not all are correct. An online map shows clear and up-to-date directions; always check a map with your teacher. An online museum lets you walk through a museum on a screen and read about its objects. A search engine searches the whole web. A specialised one searches one subject and gives better results. A general one gives more results, but some may be unreliable or unsafe, so the key words you choose matter. Always use the internet for research with a grown-up.

Worked examples
librarychecked
Jana needs a verified article about the Nile. She chooses the online library, because its content is checked. She does not choose a random page.
mapcheck
Youssef wants to see how to walk to a museum. He looks at an online map and then shows it to his teacher to check the route. Maps help, but a grown-up checks.
animalsdesert fox
Mariam types only ‘animals’ in a search engine and gets thousands of pages. She changes the key words to ‘desert fox sand colour’ and gets pages that fit. Good key words give better results.
Class activity

Source sort. Write six jobs on small cards: (1) a verified article about bees, (2) a picture I may use, (3) the road to a museum, (4) a look at an old statue without travelling, (5) a quick search for many pages, (6) the meaning of a word. Make five source labels: online library, free-to-use item search, online map, online museum, search engine. Match each job to the best source, then check with a partner and discuss any difference.

Practice

Which source lets you look at old objects without travelling?
2
Why must you check pictures from a free-to-use search?
3
Why do key words matter in a search?
4
Look at the picture. Which one is the best for checking directions to a place? Say the letter.
