Networks all around us

ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 22–25
GoalName everyday ways we use networks and tell uploading from downloading.
New words
upload · to send a file from your device to the networkdownload · to bring a file from the network to your deviceapp · a small program for one job, such as a map or a calculatoronline class · a lesson where teacher and pupils meet through a network
Explanation

Networks are working for you all day. A text message travels from your phone to a friend’s phone through a network. A phone call does too. In an online class the teacher and the pupils meet through a network instead of a classroom. Two words show which way a file goes. When you upload, you send a file up from your device to the network, for example your homework to your teacher. When you download, you bring a file down from the network to your device, for example a lesson sheet. An app is a small program for one job, like a map or a calculator. Some apps need a network and some do not. Businesses also use networks: a shop may have a closed network for its own workers and also use the open internet to talk to customers.

Worked examples
Mariamuploadteacherdownload
Mariam finishes her drawing and sends the file to her art teacher. That is an upload. The teacher sends back a sheet with tips, and Mariam saves it. That is a download.
Karimnetworkteacher
Karim has an online class. He can see and hear his teacher, who is in a different town. If the network is slow, the picture freezes for a moment.
closed: workersopen: customers
A pharmacy has a closed network for its workers to share the stock list. It also uses the open internet so that customers can ask whether a medicine is available.
Class activity

Network diary. Make a small table on paper with four rows: morning, school, afternoon, evening. For each time, write one way you or your family used a network (a call, a text, a lesson, a map). Mark each as upload, download or a two-way talk. Compare with a partner.

Practice
1
What do you do when you upload a file?
2
Salma gets a lesson sheet from the school network. Is that upload or download?
3
What is an app?
4
Look at the picture. Which arrow means upload? Say the letter.
