Hardware, data units and speed
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Make a small table with three units (for example byte, kilobyte, megabyte) and write one thing that fits each.
Answers differ. For example: byte – one letter; kilobyte – a short paragraph; megabyte – a small photo.
2
Your name has some letters. Write how many bytes and how many bits it needs.
Answers differ. Bytes = number of letters; bits = bytes × 8. For Karim: 5 letters = 5 bytes = 40 bits.
3
Draw two homes, one with a slow connection and one with a fast one, and write what a child can do in each.
Answers differ. Check that the fast home loads video quickly and the slow home is slower.
4
Look around your home with a grown-up. Find one port or cable (do not unplug it) and one place where files are stored. Draw them.
Answers differ. Any real example is fine, such as a TV cable or a phone charging port.
5
Write your own problem and a safe first fix. Use the words: slow, close, ask.
Answers differ. For example: my laptop is slow, so I close programs I do not use, and I ask a grown-up if it is still slow.
