Message, e-mail or video call?

ICT P5 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 18–21
GoalChoose between a message, an e-mail and a video call for a task, and know what to do about an unkind comment.
New words
e-mail · a letter sent through the internet that can carry filesvideo call · a talk in which people see and hear each other on screensinvitation · a message asking someone to come to an eventcomment · a short written answer under something online
Explanation

Different jobs need different forms. A short text message is quick for a friendly invitation. An e-mail is better when you need a clear, polite request, such as asking a teacher for help, or when you must attach a file. A video call is best when you want to talk about ideas and see each other, for example to plan a school event with a group. Before you send, read your message once and ask: is the tone right for this reader? Sometimes you may meet a comment that is unkind. Do not answer it in anger. Do not argue. Tell a grown-up, such as your teacher or parent, who can help you decide what to do.

A group of five children must decide together what to do at the school open day. They choose a video call with a grown-up near them, so everybody can talk and listen at once.

Mina sees an unkind comment under his drawing. He does not answer it. He shows it to his father, and together they decide what to do.
Class activity

Two short messages. Choose a topic: an event or a school task. On paper write two messages about it with invented names. The first is an e-mail to a teacher (title, who you are, reason first). The second is a message to a close friend. Now compare. List three differences in the tone and the words. Then write what you would do if you saw an unkind comment on your own work.
