Many sources, many kinds

ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 66–69

Explanation

A source is more than a page of words. A map shows places. A graph or a chart shows numbers. An infographic explains with drawings. A photograph shows what something looked like. A video shows movement and sound. An archive keeps old letters, diaries and papers. A database is an organised collection that you can search, like a very big card box. Books and articles tell stories and give explanations. Each kind answers different questions. Choose a topic from your own interests, and mark the two kinds of source that would help most. For a topic about kites, a video of flying and a book on how kites work may be best.

Worked examples

Hana wants to learn how people reached her grandparents’ village long ago. A map shows the road, and an archive of old letters could tell her more. Both kinds fit her question.
how many?how?
Omar’s topic is football. A graph shows the number of goals each player scored, and a video shows how a goal is scored. The graph answers ‘how many?’, the video answers ‘how?’
text 1text 2same fact
Jana’s class reads two invented texts about the pyramids’ visitors. Text 1: ‘Many visitors come in winter.’ Text 2: ‘Winter brings many visitors.’ They repeat the same fact, so the class trusts it more.
Class activity

Source choice. Pick a topic you like (for example bees, bridges or kites). Draw a table with the eight kinds of source and tick the two that would help most. Write why in one sentence. Then underline in two invented sentences on your topic a repeated fact and a different fact.
