Clean hands, healthy me

Workbook 2: Topic 4.4, pp. 53–56
GoalSay why we keep clean and when we wash our hands.
New words
germs · tiny living things, too small to see, that can make us illwash · to clean with water and soapill · not well, for example with a tummy ache or a cold
Explanation

Germs are all around us, and they are too small to see. Some germs can make us ill. We can wash them away with soap and clean water. Wash your hands for as long as it takes to sing a short song. Always wash them before you eat, and after you use the toilet. Wash them too after you play outside or touch animals. Having a bath or a shower keeps the rest of our skin clean. When we sneeze, we use a tissue and then bin it, so the germs do not spread. Keeping clean helps us stay well.

Class activity

Germ glitter (with an adult): put a little glitter or flour on your hands and shake hands with a friend. Look: the glitter has spread! Now wash only with water, then look again. Next wash with soap and water for a long time. Which way took off more of the glitter? Why do we use soap?
