Same and different

Workbook 2: Topic 4.1, pp. 44–47
GoalCompare animals and say one way they are the same and one way they are different.
New words
compare · to look at two things and see how they are the same and differentleg · a part of the body that an animal can walk or hop onfeather · a light part of a bird’s covering that helps it fly and keeps it warm
Explanation

We can compare animals by looking at their bodies. Some animals have fur, like a cat. Some have feathers, like a duck, and some have scales, like a fish. Some animals have wings, and some animals have none. Animals have different numbers of legs. A dog has four legs. A bird has two legs. A snail has no legs at all. When we compare, we say how animals are the same and how they are different. A cat and a dog are the same because both have fur and four legs. They are different because a dog barks and a cat meows.

Worked examples
catrabbit
A cat and a rabbit both have fur and four legs. A rabbit has long ears and hops. These are some of the ways they are the same and different.
duckgoose
A duck and a goose both have feathers, two legs and two wings. A goose is bigger than a duck.
fishlizard
A fish has scales and lives in water. A lizard also has scales, but it has four legs and lives on land.
Class activity

Animal pairs (with an adult): look at pictures of animals in a book or on a poster, or look at animals in a garden or park from a distance. Choose two animals. Say one way they are the same and two ways they are different. Try this with three pairs. You can look at colour, size, covering, legs and wings.
