GoalDescribe where the Sun seems to be in the sky in the morning, at midday and in the afternoon.
New words
midday · the middle of the day, when the Sun looks highest in the skyeast · the side of the sky where the Sun rises in the morningwest · the side of the sky where the Sun sets in the eveningappears · seems to be, or looks as if
Explanation
The Sun looks as if it moves across the sky during the day. In the morning it rises low in the sky, on one side. This side is called the east. As the morning goes on, it seems to climb higher. At midday the Sun looks highest in the sky. In the afternoon it seems to go down again, towards the other side. In the evening it sets, low in the west, and then it disappears. The next morning it rises in the east again. Remember: never look straight at the Sun. It can hurt your eyes, even when it looks small.
Worked examples
In the morning, Ravi sees sunlight coming from the east. The Sun is low in the sky, near the ground. It has not been up for long.
At midday, the Sun is at its highest point. It looks as if it is almost above his head.
In the afternoon, the Sun is lower again, but now on the other side of the sky.
Class activity
Sunny side diary (with an adult): at three times of the day, for example morning, midday and afternoon, notice which side of your home is sunny, or where a patch of sunlight falls on the floor. Do NOT look at the Sun itself. Draw a house and a sky, and mark where you think the Sun was each time. Never look straight at the Sun.
