Things that use electricity
Workbook 2: Topic 6.1, pp. 68–70
GoalSay what electricity does for us, and sort things into those that use electricity and those that do not.
New words
electricity · a kind of power that makes many machines workelectrical · works by using electricityappliance · a machine that does a job in the home or school
Explanation
Electricity makes many things work. It can give us light, sound, heat and movement. A television, a laptop and a traffic light all use electricity. We call them electrical things. A book, a pencil and a bicycle do not use electricity. You make a bicycle go with your own legs. Plants and animals do not use electricity either.
Worked examples
A television uses electricity to show pictures and make sound. When the electricity is switched off, the screen goes dark.
A traffic light uses electricity to change from red to green. A computer uses it to show words and pictures.
A spoon, a ball and a chair do not use electricity. You use your own muscles to work with them.
Class activity
Electricity hunt (with an adult): walk round one room at home or school. Make two lists on paper: things that use electricity, and things that do not. A clue: electrical things often have a cable with a plug, or a place for cells. Look only. Do not touch any socket or plug anything in. Count how many things are in each list.
