Looking after nature

Workbook 2: Topic 1.5, pp. 15–18
GoalSay how people can harm or help the environment, and give ideas that children can do.
New words
environment · everything around us: land, water, air, plants and animalslitter · rubbish dropped on the ground instead of in a bincare · to look after something and keep it safe
Explanation

The environment is everything around us: the land, the water, the air, and all the plants and animals. People can harm it. Litter on the ground can trap an animal, or make it ill if it eats it. Oil or rubbish in a river spoils the water for fish and ducks. Cutting down trees takes away animal homes. But people can help too. We can put rubbish in a bin, plant trees and flowers, and put out water for birds. Even a child can help. Small things add up when many people do them.

Worked examples

An empty drink can left in the park can cut a small animal or trap it inside. Picking it up and putting it in a bin helps.

Nodira and her friends plant a small tree in the school garden. It gives food and shelter to insects and birds.
A bowl of water in a hot garden is a small way to help birds and hedgehogs.
Class activity

Care walk (with an adult): walk around your school yard or street with a bag and gloves. Do not touch anything sharp, dirty or unknown. Pick up the safe litter and put it in a bin. Count how many pieces you find. Make a poster to ask people to keep the place clean. Wash your hands well afterwards.
