Move, rest and sleep
Workbook 2: Topic 4.4, pp. 53–56
GoalExplain that exercise and sleep help our bodies to stay healthy.
New words
exercise · moving your body so that it gets stronger, such as running or swimmingheart · the muscle inside you that pumps blood round your bodysleep · the rest your body gets at night so it can grow and mend
Explanation
Exercise helps keep our bodies healthy. When we run, swim, dance or ride a bike, our muscles get stronger. Our heart is a muscle too, and exercise keeps it strong. You may feel your heart beating faster after you run. Our bodies need rest as well. Children need lots of sleep at night. While we sleep, our bodies grow and get ready for the next day. After a good night’s sleep we feel awake and happy. Every day we can eat well, move our bodies and go to bed at a good time.
Worked examples
Kenji plays football with his friends after school. His legs and his heart get a good workout.
Lola has a cold, so she rests in bed for a day. Resting is right when we are ill. When she feels better, she will go out and move again.
At night Omar goes to bed early. In the morning he wakes up with lots of energy for school.
Class activity
Heart beat test (with an adult): sit still for one minute and put your hand on your chest. Can you feel your heart? Now jump up and down on the spot for 30 seconds and feel it again. Is it faster or slower? Say what you found: “After I jumped, my heart beat ...”.
