Designing a cabinet (wardrobe) and the basics of making it
A cabinet or wardrobe is used to store household things in order. Before designing it, we decide where it will stand and what it is for: kitchen, bedroom, hall and guest-room cabinets differ in size and inner compartments. In a clothes wardrobe there are separate places for winter and summer clothes, shoes, bags, umbrellas and hats; things used often go within easy reach. Furniture for electronic equipment needs an open space sized to the device placed there. The design starts with a sketch and drawing: width, height and depth are measured and the number of shelves set. Before a big wardrobe is made, a paper or cardboard model is built and checked. Cutting the parts to the right size takes accuracy, patience and obeying safety rules. Making it, including power tools and lifting heavy parts, is done with an adult or the teacher. A finished wardrobe is fixed to the wall or its stability is checked so that it cannot tip over and hurt a child.
Project: recall the wardrobe in your room and draw its inside plan in your notebook (how many shelves, what goes where). A classmate gives one suggestion for improvement. Nobody moves a heavy wardrobe alone at home: ask adults.
