The grid drawing of the dress front and sleeve
The front piece is built inside the same grid as the back, so the armhole, waist and hem lines of both pieces lie at the same heights. For our sample size (KAYA = 48, BnAYA = 18, shoulder width 12, bust span 9.5): the front height above the chest line is about KAYA : 2 = 24; the front neckline is as wide as at the back, BnAYA : 3 + 0.5 = 6.5, but much deeper. The centre of the bust dart is marked at the bust span KO = 9.5 cm, and the dart width is KAYA : 8 = 6; both dart sides are drawn equal. The front shoulder line is shorter than the shoulder width because of the dart: 12 − 4 = 8. The remaining small segments use the constant values in the book. Sleeve drawing: sleeve length AE = YEU (a short sleeve in our model, about 20 cm); sleeve width AA1 = upper-arm circumference + (5…6) cm, for example 28 + 6 = 34; to find the sleeve-cap height AA1 : 4 = 8.5 is taken. A sewn item must be comfortable, must not hinder breathing, circulation or movement, should keep its shape and let air through. Check: the shoulder and side edges of front and back, and the armhole and sleeve-cap lengths, must match; if they do not, the drawing is recalculated. Keep safe while drawing too: take care with sharp pencils and set-square corners, pass scissors closed and keep the work place tidy.
Front-piece table: build a table for the front piece and sleeve with your own measurements, using the book formulas, and check the lengths against the back piece.
