The designer-modeller profession; sketching new models
The word “design” comes from English “design” and means drawing, idea and the process of planning. Design is creative planning activity aimed at creating a harmonious world of objects that meet people’s material and spiritual needs. Specialists in this field who make objects comfortable and beautiful are called designers. A designer-modeller creates new modern clothing models; they take account of fashion trends, the age and build of wearers, and climate and seasons. Qualities the job needs: an unconventional view, the ability to picture the finished item, listening to the customer, a creative approach, hard work and patience. A modeller needs knowledge of drawing and often a higher education. They may also work on a computer; any mistake can be corrected. At 13–14 limbs lengthen and the body becomes more like an adult’s; clothes for this age use straight, semi-fitted and trapezoid silhouettes, yokes, pleats and relief seams. School clothes may be sports, festive or everyday. In making a sketch consider the clothing’s purpose (sport or festive), silhouette, fabric and colour, decoration and comfort. The sketch is drawn on A3 paper in coloured pencil or paint; ideas may come from fashion magazines, but are not copied. Safety: handle scissors and pencils carefully, ventilate when using paint and glue, and keep them away from eyes and mouth. When working on a computer rest your eyes every 20–30 minutes and sit upright.
Fashion sketch: draw 4 sketches of sports or festive clothing on A3 paper. Under each write the silhouette, fabric, colour and decoration. Pick the best and explain it to the class.
