The animal kingdom
Textbook, pp. 41–42
GoalList the general features of animals, their symmetry, and the main phyla and classes.
Animals are multicellular organisms adapted to life in water, on land and in air, and in soil. They are heterotrophs: they eat ready-made organic matter – herbivores eat plants, predators eat other animals, and some feed on remains or live as parasites. Unlike plants and fungi, most animals move actively (a few, such as polyps and sea squirts, are fixed in place). Their bodies can be radially symmetrical (hydra, starfish) or bilaterally symmetrical (worm, insect, fish, human). The animal kingdom is divided into invertebrates and vertebrates; vertebrates have an internal skeleton for support. The main phyla are coelenterates, worms, molluscs, arthropods and chordates. Chordates are divided into the classes fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The smaller the systematic unit, the more alike its animals are. The main ranks for animals: species, genus (urug‘), family, order (turkum), class, phylum (tip), kingdom.
Worked examples
Place of the brown bear: kingdom – animals; phylum – chordates; class – mammals; order – carnivores; family – bears (Ursidae); genus – Ursus; species – brown bear.
The common mosquito: kingdom – animals; phylum – arthropods; class – insects; order – two-winged insects (Diptera); family – mosquitoes (Culicidae); species – common mosquito. Arthropods are invertebrates with a thick body covering of chitin.
Class activity
“Animal ladder”: give cards with animals (bear, fish, bird, butterfly, jellyfish, worm). Pupils group them as vertebrate/invertebrate and by phylum and identify body symmetry. Safety: do not bring live animals to class or touch them; use pictures.
Practice
1
What is heterotrophic nutrition? Give two examples.
Eating ready-made organic matter: a herbivore (sheep) and a predator (wolf).
2
Name the five classes of the chordate phylum.
Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals.
3
What is the main difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?
Vertebrates have an internal skeleton (backbone) for support; invertebrates do not.
4
Why are two animals of the same genus more alike than two animals of the same class?
The smaller the unit, the more features its members share; a genus is a smaller unit than a class.
