Explanation

Uzbekistan lies in the middle of Central Asia, in the interior of the Eurasian mainland, far from oceans and seas. It lies between roughly 37° and 45° north latitude, about the same latitude as Spain, Italy and Greece in Europe. Uzbekistan is doubly landlocked: to reach the World Ocean you must cross at least two other countries (the only other such country in the world is Liechtenstein). Its area is about 448.9 thousand km². It borders five countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan; the borders total about 6221 km. Administratively it consists of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, 12 regions and the city of Tashkent, i.e. 14 units; the capital is Tashkent. The textbook gives the population as 35.3 million for the start of 2022 and it keeps growing, so check recent figures in official statistics.

Worked examples
Number of units: 1 (Karakalpakstan) + 12 (regions) + 1 (Tashkent city) = 14.
The border with Afghanistan runs only through Surxondaryo region along the Amu Darya and is the shortest; the longest border is with Kazakhstan.
Class activity

Map work: find Uzbekistan on the world political map, list its neighbours with the direction of each (north, east, south, west), then find your own region. Safety: do not cut the map; keep pencil points away from the eyes.

Practice
