The subject of natural-science research

Textbook, pp. 6–7
GoalUnderstand what the natural sciences study, tell a research object from a research subject, and match each science with its field of research.
New words
research object (what exactly you study) · tadqiqot obyektiresearch subject (the particular side of the object you study) · tadqiqot predmetiprocess (something that goes on step by step, e.g. breathing) · jarayonphenomenon (an event in nature, e.g. rain) · hodisa
Explanation

Science is a body of knowledge that lets us study and change nature. The nature around us consists of non-living objects, living organisms, processes and phenomena, and any of these can be a research object. The research object answers “What do you want to investigate?”. The research subject names the particular side of that object you study and answers “Which side of the object do you want to investigate?”. The natural sciences are physics, chemistry, biology, geography and astronomy. Their task is to learn the laws of nature, use them wisely for people’s benefit and help protect nature.

Worked examples
Object: the water of the Chirchiq river. Subject: how the water temperature changes through the seasons. The subject comes from the object: the object is the river water as a whole, the subject is one side of it.
Matching sciences with objects: physics – the structure of matter (non-living nature); biology – the structure of a plant root (living organisms); astronomy – the motion of the Moon (celestial bodies); geography – earthquakes and rocks. Rain falling is a phenomenon, breathing is a process.
Class activity

“Sort the cards” game: the teacher writes words such as “stone”, “penguin colony”, “wind blowing”, “mountain forming” on cards. Groups place them under “non-living object”, “living nature”, “phenomenon”, “process” and say which science studies each. Safety: only paper cards are used.

Practice
1
Which sciences belong to the natural sciences? Name five.
2
Which part of a study answers “What do you want to investigate?”?
3
The research object is a plant. Give one suitable research subject.
4
Why do we say the subject comes from the object?
