Time to review. Animals are vertebrates (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish) and invertebrates. They live in three habitats: land-air, water and soil. Every animal is adapted to its habitat: a fish breathes with gills, while desert animals save water and hide from the heat. A food chain always starts with a plant. Dinosaurs were reptiles and today’s birds are their descendants. People harm and help animals, and rare species are protected by the Red Book and reserves. Some dinosaur names describe their looks: Tyrannosaurus means “tyrant lizard king”, Triceratops “three-horned face”, and Brachiosaurus “arm lizard”.
Worked examples
Not desert animals: frog and starfish; desert animals: camel, lizard, goitered gazelle.
The ordinary sparrow is not in the Red Book; the snow leopard and the khangul are.
Class activity
“Animal quiz”: in teams answer 10 questions at the board on groups, habitats, food chains and the Red Book. The team with the most correct answers wins.
Practice
1
Sort into classes: snake, eagle, dolphin, frog, carp.
snake: reptile; eagle: bird; dolphin: mammal; frog: amphibian; carp: fish
2
Which animal does not live in the desert: camel, gazelle, lizard or frog?
The frog: it needs water and damp places.
3
Make a food chain with hare, eagle, grass and snake.
grass → hare → snake → eagle

Why are dinosaurs thought to have died out?
Because of a large asteroid impact and climate change.
