How should we protect water?
We take clean water from nature but return water mixed with waste, chemicals and oil. Polluted water harms plants, animals and people. Factories use river water to cool and wash equipment and then pour it back; it may carry metal particles and poisons. The oxygen in the water drops and fish die; poisons collect in algae and travel along the food chain to fish and people. Fresh-water shortage is a serious world problem, so water must be kept clean and saved. Farming uses the most water, so drip irrigation is used: water drips onto each plant’s root. Hydrogel holds moisture and nutrients and releases them slowly to the plant. At home: turn off the tap while brushing teeth, fix leaking taps, shorten showers, do not run too much water when washing dishes, and never pour waste or oil into canals or drains.
“Water audit”: for a day, note what your family uses water for (drinking, washing, laundry...). Find where water can be saved and make a three-rule plan.
