Protecting animals
The world’s animals need protection. Endangered animals are listed in the international Red Book and the Red Book of Uzbekistan; hunting them is forbidden. Nature reserves are set up to protect animals. There are organisations that protect the environment. Greenpeace works on climate change, shrinking forests and pollution. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) works to keep biological diversity; in Uzbekistan it takes part in projects for animals such as the snow leopard (irbis), the saiga and the Bukhara deer (khangul). Khanguls are bred in the Zarafshan reserve and then released into the wild. There are shelters for homeless animals where volunteers look after them. Before taking an animal home, think whether you have enough time, money and responsibility to look after it. Do not touch stray animals: they may bite or carry disease; tell an adult.
“Animal care” reminder: on a small poster write five rules for caring for a pet (water and food, cleanliness, walks, the vet, kindness). Show it to the class.
