Solving word problems

Textbook: Part 1, lesson 39, pp. 82–83
GoalSolving problems about money and journeys by writing expressions.
New words
bank card · plastik kartathousand soums · ming so‘mto spend · sarflamoqround trip · borib-kelish
Explanation

In money problems we watch the words “had”, “received”, “spent”: received means add, spent means subtract. For example a card had 48 thousand soums, 15 thousand came in and 36 thousand were spent: (48 + 15) − 36 = 27 thousand soums. For a round trip we count the fare twice.

Worked examples
(48 + 15) − 36 = 63 − 36 = 27 thousand soums are left.
If one trip costs n soums, a round trip costs n + n soums.
Class activity

“Little bank”: paper play-money cards. Children “buy” things in a “shop”, work out the money left on the card and write it in their notebooks.

Practice
1
A card had 48 thousand soums. 15 thousand more came in and 36 thousand were spent. How many thousand soums are left?
2
A card has 90 thousand soums. 25 thousand and 30 thousand were spent. How many thousand are left?
3
One trip costs 2 thousand soums. How many thousand for a round trip?
4
10 trips and then 5 more were put on a transport card. 9 trips were used. How many trips remain?
