Explanation

Read the article on page 63 of your book. It is about a real person, so we only read it there and talk about it, and we do not repeat facts from it. We read our own short article about an invented potter. When we read an article we look for who the person is, what the person does, why it is important and what the person achieved. A sculptor makes shapes from stone, clay, wood or metal. To promote something is to help it grow or become known. National means of the whole country. Recognition is public praise or thanks. To participate means to take part. Use the words around a new word to guess its meaning, then check the glossary.

Worked examples

Mr Ragab is a potter from a small town near Tanta. For thirty years he has made jars, lamps and small birds from clay. When he was young, his grandfather taught him to sit at the wheel and keep his hands wet. He wanted to promote traditional pottery, so he opened a small workshop for children on Saturdays. Last year he participated in a national craft fair, and visitors loved his smooth blue jars. He received a certificate, which was a great recognition for his work. Today his students are making their own small birds and lamps. Mr Ragab says, “Clay can teach you patience.”

Read the article. A grown-up reads it aloud.
Questions: Who taught Mr Ragab? His grandfather. Why did he open a workshop? To promote traditional pottery. What did he receive? A certificate.
Fill the gaps with sculptor, promote, national, recognition, participate: Students can ___ in the art fair. The ___ made a statue from clay. The prize was a great ___ . Answers: participate, sculptor, recognition.
Now you. Read page 63 and tell a grown-up one thing about the artist’s work in your own words, without copying.
