Explanation
Today’s story is in your book. Read Chapter Two of the serial story on pages 34–35, then talk about its values with our own words below. To persevere is to keep trying when something is difficult, for example a girl practises the same piece of music for a month. We feel frustrated when we try again and again and it still does not work. Empathy is understanding how another person feels: a friend who is frustrated may need kind words, not advice. A trustworthy person is honest and keeps promises, so people can rely on her. Good readers ask values questions after a chapter: What does the character learn about trying again? How does someone show empathy? Why is honesty important? There are no wrong feelings, but there are better and worse ways to act. When you feel frustrated, you can take a short break, ask a trusted adult for help and try again.

Worked examples
Read the chapter on pages 34–35 of your book. Then answer in your own words: Is it good to give up when something is difficult? Why or why not?
Context clue. Mazen was frustrated because the video kept stopping. He took a short break and tried again. Frustrated means upset because something does not work.
Empathy in action. Your friend says, “I failed my test.” An empathetic reply is: “I’m sorry. Do you want to talk about it?”
Now you. Say one thing you kept trying to do until you could do it. Use persevere.
Class activity
Values talk. Ask a grown-up to tell you about one time when they persevered. Then tell about one time when you showed empathy. Write each answer in two sentences with the words persevere and empathy.
