Review: listening, reading and short answers
This review uses new texts. For the listening, a grown-up reads once or twice: listen the first time for the main idea and the second time for details such as times, things and reasons. Write short notes. For the reading, read the title and the first sentence, scan for key words, then read the questions and find the sentence that answers each one. A short answer should be a full sentence in your own words, with a word or two from the question. For multiple choice, find the sentence in the text first, then compare it with the three options. Check tenses: past simple for the trip, if sentences for plans, and connectors such as because, so and although.
| Skill | What to do |
|---|---|
| Listening for details | Note times, things and reasons while you listen. |
| Scanning | Find the key word in the text. Read around it. |
| Short answers | Use a full sentence. Start with the question words. |
| Multiple choice | Find the sentence first. Then choose the option with the same meaning. |
Hello, everybody. This Thursday our school will hold a small Art and Invention Fair in the hall. The doors open at ten o’clock. Students will display their paintings, clay models and new inventions. If you bring a friend, you will get a free bookmark. A teacher will give feedback to everyone who participates. Although the fair is small, we want it to make a difference, so there will be a box for old paper. Please arrive early because the hall will be busy.
Last Thursday our class visited a craft village not far from our town. We went by bus, and the journey took forty minutes. First a guide showed us a workshop where women were weaving colorful rugs. The women make the rugs from wool, and every rug is original. Then we watched a potter who was shaping a jar while we were talking to him. Although the workshop was hot, nobody wanted to leave. After lunch we made small clay animals, and the teacher said she would display them in the school gallery. I bought a small rug as a souvenir, and it is one of my best memories of the term.
Listening and reading at home. Ask a grown-up to read a short news item or a short story. Write three questions with When, What and Why. Swap with the grown-up, answer in full sentences and check each other’s answers.
